Understanding the Impact of Record Cold Temperatures

We understand that many of our members have concerns about higher-than-expected electric bills this month. Southeastern North Carolina recently experienced record-breaking cold temperatures, which may have led to an increase in your energy usage—even if you didn’t change your thermostat settings.

Here’s why:

  • Heat Strips Activate More Frequently – If you use a heat pump, it works efficiently in mild temperatures. However, when outdoor temperatures drop significantly (typically below 35°F), your system relies on auxiliary (or emergency) heat strips to maintain indoor comfort. These strips use significantly more electricity, causing energy use to spike.
  • Longer Heating Cycles – Your heating system had to work harder and for longer periods to maintain your desired indoor temperature. Even if you didn’t adjust the thermostat, the extreme cold meant your system was running more often.
  • Increased Overall Usage – Shorter days and colder weather often mean more time indoors, leading to higher energy use from lighting, electronics, and heating appliances.
