Calling All High School Juniors--
Apply now for the 2007 Rural Electric Youth Tour Trip to Washington, D.C.!

BURGAW, N.C.--The recruiting process has begun for high school juniors to apply for an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. Each year Four County Electric seeks four high school juniors to apply for the Rural Electric Youth Tour trip that takes place in June. This year's trip will take place Saturday, Saturday, June 9 through Friday, June 15. Four winning students will be selected from Bladen, Duplin, Pender, Sampson, Columbus and Onslow counties based upon the results of an essay contest and a personal interview. The winner of the contest will be sent to Washington, D.C. along with other Youth Tour winners from across North Carolina. Once in D.C., they will meet up with approximately 1,500 other students from around the country.

This is an exciting, fun and educational trip for students. The trip will better inform students about electric co-ops and includes visits to congressional representatives as well as tours of the U.S. Capitol Building, White House, Smithsonian Institution, Mount Vernon and other historical sites.

“The four students chosen for the Youth Tour last year were thrilled when they returned. They could not stop talking about how much fun they had, and about how many new friends they made. They highly recommend the trip to their peers,” comments Gay Johnson, Four County EMC's Director of Corporate Communications.

The Youth Tour trip to Washington is an excellent resume building tool that exhibits leadership and community involvement. This can come in handy as students begin to apply for college.

Scholarship Opportunities
Each student selected as a Youth Tourist has an opportunity to apply for two different scholarship opportunities--the $2,500 Gwyn B. Price Scholarship and the $2,000 Katie Bunch Memorial Scholarship. The students compete against all North Carolina Youth Tourists (typically about 40 students) for these scholarships.

Information on how to apply for the Youth Tour trip will be delivered to area 11th grade students in January and is available on our website (click here to be linked to the application). Deadline for applications will be Friday, February 23, 2007.

Runners up will be selected through this application process to attend Cooperative Leadership Camp at White Lake, N.C. in June. There are also scholarships and national opportunities for winners chosen for the camp.

If you would like more information on the program, please contact Director of Corporate Communications, Gay Johnson (910) 259-1834.

If you have a son or daughter in the 11th grade, please encourage him or her to apply for this exciting trip. If you are a teacher, please announce the trip to your school.

“This is an opportunity that every eleventh grade student should take advantage of,” Johnson notes. “It is a great way to build for your future and meet a lot of friends along the way!"
