2020 Annual Meeting Canceled

As announced in the July issue of Carolina Country, the Four County EMC 2020 Annual Meeting schedule was tentative due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 30th, the Board of Directors met and, after careful consideration, unanimously voted to cancel this year’s meeting. The meeting was scheduled for Monday, October 5th at Pender High School in Burgaw.

With the continued uncertainty caused by COVID-19, it is unclear whether the Cooperative would be able to legally conduct a large meeting while following social distancing guidelines. The decision to cancel was made now out of respect for the numerous vendors involved and the planning required for an event that attracts more than 2,000 members.

There have been times in the past where Four County has not held annual meetings. For example, there were no annual meetings during WWII, and they were held every other year from 1952-1960.

Since the pandemic’s beginning, our members’ and employees’ health and safety have been a top priority. We appreciate our members’ understanding of this decision to uphold one of our Cooperative Principles – Concern for Community.

“We know members look forward to our annual meeting each year,” said Mitchell Keel, Four County EMC’s CEO. “It’s a tradition we value and cherish. This decision was not made lightly, but we felt it was in the best interest of our cooperative and the communities we serve.”

With the cancellation of the meeting, the four board members whose terms are expiring this year will carry over to 2021. These directors will run for a two-year term next year, instead of three years, to continue the ‘staggered’ nature of the board’s terms. Seven directors will run in 2021: the four whose terms would expire this year and three whose terms expire in 2021.

We will miss seeing our members in October, but remember that we are still here for you, powering our homes, businesses and communities.

All the Cooperative’s employees are eager to help you, our members. For additional information, please contact us at 888-368-7289.
